About Emily Stevens

“How well do you know this community and the school district?”

​

I am a native of Las Vegas. I was born in the old Nellis AFB hospital, and we lived here until I was about 2

years old. From there, we were moved and stationed in California, Florida, and Japan. Finally, my dad

got orders to come back to Nellis AFB when I was 10 years old. He ended up retiring here and Las Vegas

became home. My parents homeschooled me for a few years and then I attended a CCSD school in 8 th

grade (Swainston Middle School). After that year, my parents decided to put me in a private school.

Years later, I had children of my own and they attended charter schools throughout elementary and

middle school, and currently attend a CCSD high school.

 

“What is your profession?”

​

I am the Vice President of Business Development for SCE Credit Union. A big part of what I do is engage

in the community and create lasting partnerships. This endeavor has led me to sit on multiple boards

where I volunteer and try to make a difference for our young people. For example, I sit on the board for

the Academy of Finance at Clark High School. I sit on the board at Mission High School. I sit on the

advisory committee for Communities in Schools, and I was recently asked to join a new advisory

committee that focuses on financial literacy for students at UNLV (especially for incoming freshmen). I

teach financial literacy all over the valley and work primarily with schools and non-profit organizations

that understand the value of empowering folks with the information they need to be financially secure.

I’ve been with the credit union for over 5 years and have over 15 years of experience in sales and

marketing.

 

“What qualifies you for this position?”

​

Our school district is unique. My time living here, and my experience volunteering in the school district

provides me with a level of understanding that I think is necessary for this role.

​

I am not a professional politician. My intention is to genuinely be a public servant. I try very hard to be

an active listener and I’ve already been out in the community asking questions and listening. If I am in

this to make positive change, I must learn from the folks in my district and I must listen. This position

calls for authentic representation and that is something that can only be done by taking the time to

listen to and work with my local community.

I am a student of effective communication and it’s very evident that this role needs a representative

that can communicate and collaborate with professionalism and effectiveness. These qualities are some

that I must employ every day in my role at the credit union, at the board meetings I attend, and in the

events and workshops that I present at.

 

The CCSD Board of Trustees must vote on tough matters sometimes, including monetary and budget

items. My experience in business and managing department budgets gives me a different perspective

that, I believe, would be valuable to this board.

Finally, I believe this role requires leadership. Currently, I lead 2 departments at my company, and I

understand the importance of strategic and original thinking, follow-through, accountability, integrity,

professionalism, and character. These are qualities that I work hard to exemplify in my day-to-day and I

believe they would help me be successful in this role.

 

“What areas would you want to focus on first if elected as trustee?”

​

If you’re familiar with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, you understand the premise that if basic needs are

not met first, it becomes more challenging to meet higher-level needs. Our school district has a lot of

needs. In my opinion, Clark County has grown much faster than our school district was equipped to

handle. There’s a lot of “catching up” that we are trying to do so my focus areas are based on

prioritization. I believe if we can meet these needs first, it won’t be as challenging to work our way up

and fix the other challenges the school district currently faces.

“Who are you outside of work and campaigning?”

​

I am a proud mother of 2 teenage boys. They both wrestle for their school (yes, they are in the school

district), and it is my absolute joy watching their duels and tournaments. My oldest will be graduating

high school this year and will leave for basic training (Army) in the summer. My youngest will be a senior

in the Fall and plays guitar and drums every chance that he can. When I’m not at wrestling tournaments

or at work, I enjoy all that Southern Nevada has to offer! We like to go to Mount Charleston for

snowboarding fun (well… they snowboard. I sit in the warm lodge and watch them). We also enjoy

hiking and camping, and I especially enjoy the ambiance of all the amazing dining and entertainment in

town whenever I can get out.
